Catfish Trailer Analysis

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=catfish+trailer

This clip begins with a guy sat in his house casually on the phone (close up) to the girl character he has met through Facebook. We see bright colours in the beginning connoting that the film is innocent, fun and light hearted which is reinforced by the children singing as non diegetic sound when we see old childhood videos on screen of the female character. The audience discovers the main male is called Nev and it is obvious that the film is of his life documented by his friends. Viewers are intrigued by how personal the footage is as it's from a handheld camera (point of view shots) and the clips are of Nevs life in chronological order which makes it easier to understand. We see a photoshopped photograph of him and the girl connoting that she isn't all she seems as Nevs friends made the photo for a laugh because they think she is surreal.

The trailer seems humorous at the beginning but then the non diegetic music becomes serious and the lighting in the footage gets darker connoting that things change into a darker story. This is intriguing to the audience as they will be confused as to why the narrative seems to get more serious, however there is quite a lot of the narrative given away through using voiceovers over images throughout. Also, the audience see screengrabs from social media through a montage of images and clips. Whenever an intertitle appears on screen the background looks pixelated which connotes technology advances, this would attract a younger audience between the ages of 14 and 25.

This is an independent, low budget film from universal pictures. At the end of this clip is reviews, official website, quotes from website, but there is no institutional information like the directors/actors names or a release date.

AS Gossip Poster

This is a poster I have created to advertise my AS film gossip. I have taken inspiration from other posters I have researched which has helped me with how to layout my poster and what to include on it. Title is in the biggest  font at the top of the page as it is the first thing my viewer will read. It is in a bold, feminine looking font, especially because it is pale pink as is all of the text for synergy. Pink largely connotes that this film is targeted at a female audience which works really well as the film genre is teen angst and it is rated a 12A (certificate in bottom right corner). I think the genre is quite obvious because of the shown rivalry between the main characters which connotes drama within the film, particularly as the girl on the right looks disgusted at the other girl, but the brunette is oblivious and smiling. The fact they are back to back connotes that they have some issues with each other but are still touching which connotes they are close friends despite their problems.

The billing block placed below the title includes actors names, directors, editors and the production company. Underneath the block are the production company logos which is part of the institutional information. Release date displayed at the bottom of the poster in bold to match the title at the top for synergy, and intrigues viewer to watch the film when it is out as the target audience is teenage girls whom will be available in summer time for the films time at the box office.

Tagline has comedic value as it links to the conventions of the title and I have included an exclamation mark so it exaggerates the teen angst genre. Blue is really vibrant which will attract a younger audience because they are attracted to bright colours as appose to an adult audience who wouldn't care so much.

Main characters are wearing the same outfits in this film poster as they are in the AS opening sequence to create a synergistic link between the two and to ensure this poster looks as if it is advertising the same film as I did for AS. Also, the characters are recognisable in this poster due to their appearances, particularly their outfits.

Remake Of Full Metal Jacket Poster

Original                                                                                  Remake

The main colours used for this poster are black, red and camo which makes it appear ghastly as red connotes blood and black connotes death. Expresses the conventional iconography of war, especially because the photo is of a helmet that is filled with bullets. Title of the film displayed is in a bold black font that is very masculine which links to how only men were able to go to war.

Image is of a war helmet that looks like a piranha connoting danger to make the audience feel scared. Connotes that the genre is action due to when a helmet would be worn. In addition, the dark colours further connote the horrible realism of war that is obviously expressed massively in this film advertised.

Along the top of this poster is a humorous line which contrasts to how serious the film is. Also, it expresses how people resort to humour when faced with difficult or serious situations in life. All of the billing block information is in black along with the title and written line at the top to match for synergy. The black and white colour scheme of this poster makes it look simple which leads the audience to focus on the main image.

At the bottom of the poster is institutional information, directors name, production company and the billing block. All included in small font because it is a lot of important information to fit in one section.

This poster could be taken offensive in the sense that people who actually went to war may find the humorous line too insensible as it could come across as a mindless way to intrigue an audience into watching a serious film that may be a documentary, but this is not clear.

Overall, I think this poster is impactful by the photo that is used placed central. It gives the audience a sense of what is to come in the film advertised. On the other hand, release date is not shown.

Beauty And The Beast Poster Research

The main colour used for this poster is blue which makes it appear really peaceful and a bit mysterious. Expresses the conventional iconography of Disney, especially because of the princess looking castle on the right in the background. Title of the film displayed is in a ornate golden, slim font placed in the centre of the poster in the largest font on the page.

Images are of all of the main characters within the film, they are almost placed symmetrically around the centre picture showing a female character holding a set of candles in front of a stained glass window that connotes the film is high classed. Also, what all the characters are wearing tells us that they are of high class so are wealthy, the colours red and gold connote high power.

In addition, the beast character connotes that it is a fairy tale story, the girl holding the rose tells us that it is a romantic film because roses are associated with love. This contrasts to how dark the beastly character is which connotes that he is feeling pain or upset.

Along the top of this poster are actors names, starting with well known Emma Watson for star power to intrigue audience. Names are in slim capital letters with the surnames bigger than the forenames, golden to match film title for synergy. Also in gold is the release date at the bottom of the page to ensure that it is noticeable as it is important information, gold for synergy too.

At the bottom of the poster is institutional information, advertisement for 3D and IMAX screenings, directors name, production company and the billing block. All included in small font because it is a lot of important information.

This poster could be taken offensive in the sense that wealthy men are overweight , the gay character is posing in a feminine way, the women are wearing a lot of make up and corsets, connoting they care a lot about their appearance. These are all very stereotypical representations of people but they suit what time period this film is set in.

Overall, I think this poster is impactful with the colours and layout used. It gives the audience a sense of what is to come in the film advertised.

Sight & Sound Cover Research

Masthead-Sight & Sound is the biggest font on the page along with the strapline. Shows the viewer that there is a lot of exclusive information in this magazine so they don't need to look elsewhere. Main character from the image is behind publication that is so well known, the reader will recognise it on the shelf. The title is in black font which seems boring but is eye catching as it's in a yellow box with a red 'and' sign.

The main colours used are white, black, yellow and red. Yellow boxes have important information for seller such as barcode and institutional information. Grey background behind main character is to ensure viewers attention is not taken away from all the information and featured interview.

Cover lines include advertisement for other films of similar genre to featured film and broadcasting of known actors talk about in magazine issue. Strapline is a directors name in capital letters and colours that match the cover lines for synergy.

The iconography of what the main character is wearing connotes that he is a wealthy man as leather is expensive. Colour black is all he is wearing, connotes mystery and authority. Contrasts with his grey hair and blue eyes that are looking directly into the camera, making audiences feel intrigued as he looks conspicuous.

Main image is positioned slightly to the right showing close up of main character in magazine interview. He is looking at the camera completely focussed with his body facing directly toward the camera. This makes it clear to see he is wearing a leather jacket. Background is a blank grey but adds context and does not blend with main image at all, making character more prominent which gives reader idea of his high importance.

Website for magazine is not included on this cover, neither are any pugs so no films are advertised by photos. This could make viewers uninterested because they have to read the given information about other films to then look inside the issue to see photos.

Question marks used on some cover lines placed on the left of the cover. Leaves audience questions so they want to look in the issue to discover answers inside magazine issue.

The design of the masthead looks simple as does the background but it means focus is on the featured main character. This connotes that he is very important, especially as his name makes the strapline and underneath that it gives the viewers hints to what he talks about within the issue, making them want to buy the issue.

This cover does not include pugs displayed anywhere on the page, however it is obvious that the featured information from the character is the most important for the audience to know more about. There are no magazine puffs included on the cover which is strange but this tells the audience that the films advertised as cover lines are worth knowing about.

This cover is good because of how the layout allows the viewer to focus on the main photo and the content includes really intriguing information to the reader, without giving a lot away. Very different to other magazine covers I have researched as it is advertising an interview instead of featuring a film. Cronenburg is mainly known for being in films of the horror genre, he is a film maker and his interview could be covering a variety of topics so this interests the viewer.

The Lobster Poster Research

This poster seems really strange since we can see a man hugging a blank silhouette, keeping the narrative very mysterious. The main monochrome colours connote that this film is sombre and has lots of serious meaning within the narrative. Iconography of a hug represents love which is missing in this poster due to the blank silhouette. Font of the title is bold in black and centred just above the billing block which is written in a really small font. Production company logo is placed at the top of the block of writing so viewers clearly see who produced the film. This will intrigue the audience as they will know the production company.

Genre is not clear through this poster but through research I know the film is romantic and has comedic value. It is slightly seen as romantic because of how the photo is portrayed as figures hugging which connotes love.

Tagline is not present on the poster which is unusual because they are used to entice a potential audience. The USP relies on how audiences find the poster interesting due to the main image being strange making it fascinating and slightly artistic. Critics are not quoted which implies that known names haven't viewed the film yet in order to review it. Consequently this makes the audience think that the film is not very incredible.

Attention from viewers is grabbed by revealing what actors are in the film, the first written is Colin Farrell who is a well known actor. Release date information is not clear, if it is included then it is written too small to read easily, same goes for the films certificate rating. This causes confusion as to what the target audience is, who the film is appropriate for.

Overall I think this poster could have important information clearly written in a bigger font placed around the layout. Small writing is really difficult to read. However, I like how mysterious the main photo is, it is likely to intrigue an audience into wanting to see the film.

Assassin Poster Research

This posters main colours are orange, red, white, blue and green which looks as if they represent the four elements earth being the green, fire being the orange and red, air being the white clouds and water being the blue. The elements theme may be giving a clue to the viewers abut what the plot is includes. The main title is written in a small, slim white font almost central but not quite.

The information at the bottom is in a really small font making it difficult to read but ensuring that it is not the most important information for the viewer to read on the poster. In the centre of the bottom half of the poster it reads 'best foreign language film' which promotes it as the viewer will be interested in why it is such good film.

At the top of the poster there is a positive review about the film advertised which was written by someone from a niche audience as includes that it was shown in the Cannes Film Festival, was rated popular there. This review is placed where the viewer first looks when seeing the poster.

Main image is of a girl looking away from the camera holding a weapon in her hand and pointing it to the ground. She looks like a warrior type of character which is connoted through how she is wearing all black, links to the title.

The red font used against her black dress works well and goes with the synergy of the whole poster. Also, the white font is very prominent as the image is quite dark, contrast gets the viewers attention.

AS Gossip Magazine Cover

This is my magazine cover to advertise my AS teen angst opening 'Gossip'. I have tried to replicate layouts from film magazine covers I have researched but have manipulated it so it is original. Taking inspiration from other magazine covers helped me a lot in what I wrote as cover lines and how I grouped my pugs in a column of three.

Masthead- Scene is the biggest font on the page. Shows the viewer that there is a lot of exclusive information in this magazine so they don't need to look elsewhere. The font is bold and white which makes it prominent against the blue background so it is eye catching to the viewer.

The main colours for fonts are white and pink. Pink connotes the teen angst genre and the white is easy to read against the main image. This appeals to a younger audience with the main cinema demographic ranging from 13-18 year olds as the genre is directed at teenagers and the style of this magazine is simple.

Cover lines include advertisement for other films that are still of the teen angst genre. This gets the readers attention to more films outlined inside the magazine. Use of white font ensures they are clear to read and the compact, slim looking font is used to entice a younger audience as it is simple looking.

Strapline is the title of the main featured film in capital letters and colours that match some cover lines for synergy and so the viewer can distinguish which parts of the information on this cover are to do with the main film. Also, the pink font connotes conventions of the teen angst genre. One line underneath used to intrigue audience written in smaller, impact font so it does not take attention away from featured film title.

Barcode adds institutional information small in bottom corner. I should have included the publication company next to the barcode.

The iconography of what the main characters are wearing connotes that they are two casual stereotypical teenage girls who are quite similar in what they wear as their shoe are almost the same, as are their trousers. This connotes that they are not extremely different people, but the girl on the right is wearing a brighter jumper than the other girl which connotes that she wants more attention. The way they are standing suggests that their close friends which is visible through how they are smiling at each other. Links to AS because I took this main image in a school setting.

Main image is positioned in the centre showing long shot of main characters in featured film. They are looking directly at each other with their bodies positioned towards each other with their postures being relaxed and casual.. This makes it clear to see that they are comfortable around each other but aren't too close as friends because there is a little distance between them.

Website for Scene so reader can get more information. Relevant to contemporary audiences.

Exclamation marks used on cover lines placed underneath issue number to intrigue reader and discover answers inside magazine issue.

Images are included when advertising other films of the same genres which makes the reader want to purchase magazine to find detailed information inside. Along the top of cover reads 'get the lowdown on the biggest teen angst film'. The colour pink is vibrant which automatically makes the reader read the top of the cover.

If I were to do this again I would make sure the text on the left is further onto the cover and I would include some pink on the right to balance out the colour. But, I did include pink in these places because it gives a clear indication that the information links to AS.

Moonlight Poster Research

This is a very artistic film poster which I think works well and gives an indication to what the film is like. The glowing slim font stands out against the photo but because of the harmonious calming colours the viewers eye is drawn to the image first. I like how the writing is minimalistic but this means that all the relevant information might not be included and what is included may be hard to read as the font is quite small and all at the bottom.

As it is artistic it almost doesn't look like a film poster but does look like a theatre play instead which could cause confusion amongst viewers. The one line at the top is written a small, slim font which is good for the synergy but is difficult to see or read. All of the writing at the bottom is just actors, directors and producers names when there could be reviews from niche audiences. 'Coming Soon' is written very small at the bottom of the poster which is irritating because the date is not obvious to the viewer.

The characters face is very serious and unhappy which connotes that the film is of a documentary or drama genre about a true story. Not much information about the film is given which makes it mysterious, allowing viewers to be fascinated about the narrative. His face is very prominent and clear to viewers which creates an emotional response. Also, it is interesting how there is a triangular shape down the centre of his face where we can actually realise that on the right hand side is a different persons face altogether as he has a beard and a type of hat on.

Empire Cover Research

This magazine cover is very eye catching as the colours used are blue, yellow, red, white and black. These colours combined onto one page stand out which allows viewers to read every piece of information included all over. The cover lines are a bold mix of yellow and white where all of the film titles are in capitals and on the left two actors names are in capitals which is use of star power making the audience want to read on about well known actors. As the cover lines on the right are so dominant it makes the viewer read every detail which intrigues them to read on inside the issue.

Masthead reads Empire in bold red font and is partly covered by main photo from featured film as audience know the magazine well already. Photo is of a main character from the film saga Pirates Of The Caribbean which is hinted at in the puff (black circle) under the masthead but the film title is not written out because it is such a well known saga that only a photo is needed to get viewers interest.

The character is standing slightly side on but is looking directly at the camera as he holds a type of gun. This, along with his attire, connotes that he is a pirate not to be messed with which we can see through how he is armed and looking extremely focussed. His dreadlocks connote that he is very unhygienic but he likes to look this way as he has decorated his dreads with various beads and shells. We can assume that he stole his attire from various wealthy people as he wears a oversized shirt.

Top line on the magazine cover has an exclamation mark to excite the viewer and get them interested as it is the first thing they read. 'Essential 2011 Preview' is written in contrasting black and yellow bold fonts and has been printed big to entice the audience into wanting to buy the issue. 'Starring' is written in small italics because it is not the main focus of the right hand side, the focus should be on what films are included in the magazine, making viewers want to pick it off the shelf.

I think this magazine cover would be better if there were pugs somewhere but I like how the main image is so dominant as the only image. Also, I think this cover has really good intriguing information written all over where things are mentioned but not completely given away. The fonts and colours are all very assertive which would be extremely eye catching compared to other magazine covers that would be displayed on the shelf.

Remake Of Total Film Sherlock Cover

Original Cover                                                        Remake Cover

Masthead-Total Film is the biggest font on the page. Shows the viewer that there is a lot of exclusive information in this magazine so they don't need to look elsewhere. Hidden behind the main image is the publication that is so well known, the reader will recognise it on the shelf. The word film is included in the title to make it clear to readers what genre the magazine is.
The main colours used are white, black and different tones of blue. The faded blue is used throughout for synergy and to link with the idea of a mysterious film. This appeals to a young adult audience with the main cinema demographic ranging from 18-25 year olds as the star power of Robert Downey Junior will intrigue this audience. Also, this young audience have more disposable income and fewer responsibilities.
Cover line on the right include advertisement for other films that are more for a male audience. Cover lines on the left are extra information for the featured film. This gets the readers attention to more films outlined inside the magazine and ensures to intrigues the viewer on the main film. Use of black font ensures they are clear to read and the compact, slim looking font is used to suit male readers more than female or children because it is simple.
Strapline is the title of the main featured film in capital letters and colours that match the masthead for synergy.
Barcode and publication company add institutional information small in bottom corner.
The iconography of what the main character is wearing connotes that he is a high class working man as he wears a smart jacket with tie. His big collar and patterned shirt connotes that he is wealthy and he looks like a determined character as he is looking directly into the camera, this links with the detective genre.
Main image is positioned in the centre showing mid shot of main character in featured film. He is looking at the camera completely focussed with his body facing directly toward the camera. This makes it clear to see he is wearing a suit. Background is blurred and faded but adds context and does not blend with main image, making character more prominent which gives reader idea of his high importance.
Website for Total Film under masthead so reader can get more information. Relevant to contemporary audiences.
Exclamation marks used on each cover line placed underneath given website and issue to intrigue reader and discover answers inside magazine issue.
Images are included when advertising other films of different genres which makes the reader want to purchase magazine to find detailed images inside. Along the top of cover reads '10 coolest movies being made right now!' half in blue bold capitals and half in slim white capitals used to get readers attention as it's first thing they see. The films advertise give the viewers a variety of choice between different genres so it's highly likely that wide audience will have a preferred genre shown.
The design of the masthead looks dull as does the background but it fades into hazy buildings on the left and right where we can see big ben. This tells us that the featured film is based in London so it is British. The expression on the main characters face looks intense which is exaggerated by how his whole face is well lit.
It is good that this cover does include pugs displayed at the top of the page, however it is obvious that the featured film is the most important film for the audience to know more about and watch. There are no magazine puffs included on the cover which is strange but this tells the audience that the films advertised as cover lines are worth knowing about.
This cover is good because of how the layout allows the viewer to focus on the main photo advertising the featured film and the content includes really intriguing information to the reader, without giving a lot away. Also, the pugs included give the audience a variety of film genres which overall makes them more intrigued to all of the information included inside the magazine issue. On the other hand, this cover could have a wider variety of colour so it doesn't blend as much and it is more eye catching on the shelf.
